Lake Superior College Expo

Higher Ed and Nonprofits Partner to Provide Empowerment for Community Members in the Duluth-Superior Region — More than 100 community members from the Duluth-Superior area took part in a first-time financial fitness, college education and housing expo hosted at Lake Superior College in Duluth last November.

Held on a Saturday, the free event featured a number of breakout sessions including budgeting and saving, credit and debt, buying a house, foreclosure options, tenant/landlord rights and college financial aid/literacy, choosing a college, and prior credit.  One-on-one appointments were also available with certified financial planners, credit counselors, housing counselors, college financial aid representatives, flood relief specialists, and fair housing experts.

“We were pleased with the interest in this first-time event,” said LSC Diversity Director Wade Gordon. “Clearly, there’s a need in our area for people to have access to professional advice and help in money matters, housing and school.  Some of the people attending had been affected by last summer’s flood and were looking for support.  We also saw quite a few young single parents who want to better their lives and their children’s future.”

Lake Superior College, the College of St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College partnered with area nonprofit organizations including One Roof Community Housing, Lutheran Social Services, and Community Action Duluth to sponsor and organize the event.
