Yesterday at the Capitol
The Senate Higher Education and Workforce Development committee took up a series of bills yesterday in committee that address data disclosures to students with the intent that students, the consumer, can make better informed decisions regarding such things as which college to attend, which program to take, and loans to take out. SF329, a bill introduced by Sen. Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake, requires materials disseminated by public postsecondary institutions to disclose data potential students can use to make more informed decisions. Sen. Benson told committee members that when she visited colleges with her son who is looking at applying for college, she felt that the colleges were upfront about the benefits of attending a certain college, but not very upfront about the risks. She said that instead of stored data on a distant Web site, she would prefer the information to be included in materials disseminated by the college. Committee Chair Sen. Terri Bonoff, DFL-Minnetonka, said that she would prefer the bill applied to all sectors across higher education in Minnesota so that consumers have a broad knowledge of choices. The bill, along with the other bills heard by committee members yesterday, was laid over for possible inclusion in the omnibus bill.
