SUMMARY:Quantitative Reasoning Corequisite Learning Community (Fall 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Faculty Learning Community\nOctober 13 – December 5\, 2025\nRegistration Closes October 1\nNED + Math Pathways\nThe NED has partnered with Math Pathways staff to offer educational development opportunities tailored to support Minnesota State mathematics and statistics faculty. \n\nQuantitative Reasoning Corequisite Learning Community\nThis learning community is designed to explore the implementation of corequisite support courses. Participants will share insights on course structure\, grading schemes\, alignment\, student engagement\, and both cognitive and non-cognitive support strategies\, as well as best practices. We will also discuss our struggles and successes. \nModule 1 answers the question “Why Corequisites?” We’ll start with the definition of what a corequisite is and what it isn’t then focus on the evidence supporting corequisite implementation. \nModule 2 focuses on Corequisite Design.  We’ll work our way through topics such as Course outcomes\, Credits\, Comingled vs. Cohort\, Class size\, Staffing\, Placement\, Grading\, Scaling\, Modes\, Scheduling\, Withdrawal/drop policies\, Syllabus policies. \nModule 3 is all about the Corequisite Classroom Experience. What do you actually do during a corequisite class period? How can you incorporate student voice? What  opportunities are there for specific\, actionable feedback? How do we feature good mistakes\, scaffold\, provide low stakes collaborative practice\, facilitate active learning? How can we make separate homework\, purposeful\, intentional\, and valuable? \nModule 4 works with Aligning the Corequisite Support Course to the College-Level Course. \nModule 5 moves beyond prerequisite content and focuses on Support Activities\, these may include previewing upcoming topics\, reviewing past topics\, spending more time/diving more deeply into current topics\, scaffolding the learning\, trouble-shooting the common trouble spots\, etc. \nModule 6 is on the Basics of Non-Cognitive Supports. We’ll define what they are\, investigate why they are important\, and highlight the most relevant supports for our students. \nModule 7 will focus on Implementing Non-Cognitive Supports in the corequisite classroom. This is the “How” of non-cognitive supports. \nModule 8 aims to Connect Students to Support Services available at your campus. We’ll work on identifying students who have particular needs and identifying the appropriate resource(s). \nOutcomes\nAfter the community\, participants will be able to: \n\nDiscuss the purpose of corequisite support courses.\nExplore effective strategies to align corequisites with college-level coursework.\nIdentify evidence-based best practices for implementing corequisite support courses.\nIdentify nonacademic services to support corequisite students.\nShare examples\, resources\, experiences\, and suggestions for teaching the college corequisite to enhance student learning.\nFoster connections among faculty across the system to build a collaborative community for shared engagement.\n\nSchedule\nLearning communities will run October 13 – December 5\, 2025 and include a mix of asynchronous activities and synchronous collaboration meetings. \nParticipants should expect to join synchronous monthly Zoom meetings held from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. on the following dates: \n\n10/23\n11/6\n11/20\n12/4\n\nAudience\nThis learning community is intended for Minnesota State math faculty who are currently teaching or planning to teach a Statistics course with corequisite. \nCompensation\nThe Math Pathways grant will pay first come first serve Minnesota State mathematics faculty participants to register a stipend of $1050 (including fringe) for successful completion of the learning community in fall 2025. \nCourse Location \nIn addition to Zoom meetings\, this course is hosted and facilitated using the D2L Brightspace instance of Minnesota State called\, MnSite.  \n\nAccommodations\nThe NED is committed to providing universal access to all of our events\, we’d like to discover how we can make the event more inclusive so you can fully participate! \n\nMachine generated captions are available in real-time for all Zoom events\, however human generated CART (live caption) service and ASL interpretation can be requested with advanced notice (2 weeks) to make the event more accessible. \nPlease\, let us know of any disability-related accommodations that will facilitate your full participation. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?  \nContact the Network for Educational Development. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. SUMMARY:Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Fall 2025)
DESCRIPTION:October 6 – 26\, 2025\n\nShort Course\n\nDescription \nOur chancellor has given us the challenge of eliminating our equity gaps by 2030. How can we\, as instructors\, shift our teaching practices to meet this goal? One promising path is to ground those practices in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP). CRP advocates that good teaching draws on the knowledge and skill our students bring to the classroom\, creates supportive relationships that allow students to take learning risks\, and prepares students to challenge barriers to their full flourishing. In this course we will increase our knowledge of some foundational CRP practices. \nTraining expectations are weekly short readings and weekly contributions to asynchronous discussions focused on how we might incorporate CRP into our teaching practices. All participants will receive a copy of Zaretta Hammond’s Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain\, which will be an option reading for the short course. \n\nCourse Learning Objectives \nThrough engaging in the work of the training\, faculty will be able to: \n\nGain ideas for incorporating central tenets into outcomes\, materials\, assessments\, activities\, syllabi\, and relationships.\nIdentify interconnections between microaggressions\, structural racism\, stereotype threat\, and course success.\nUse our increased knowledge of CRP to share with\, support\, and encourage other faculty learners to increase everyone’s skills at CRP.\nTrace how our values have changed and/or deepened through engaging in course.\nCreate a professional development plan for making next steps on the journey of culturally responsive teaching.\n\n\nTechnical Skill Requirements\n\nUse a web browser\nCreate\, save and upload Word documents\nNavigate Microsoft Windows\nCreate and send an email using your Minnesota State account\nEvaluate and decide whether or not to use OneDrive\nSet up\, Attend\, and Participate in Zoom gatherings\nPerform basic tasks associated with the following D2L Brightspace tools: Content\, Quizzes\, Surveys\, Discussion\, and Assignments\n\nSuggested Audience \nFaculty (Full-time and part-time)\, Instructional Designers and Technologists\, Faculty Developers/Trainers\, and Concurrent Enrollment Instructors.\n \nEstimated Time Commitment \nMost participants are able to complete this course by committing 4-6 hours per week. \nReflect on your Professional Development \nAs you progress through this course\, please consider how you can use the assignments as a way to highlight your work on your Professional Development Plan. SUMMARY:Strengths-Based Advising (Fall 2025)
DESCRIPTION:A subtle but pernicious challenge to students from marginalized populations navigating higher education is the presence of deficit thinking in implicit and explicit forms. Advising\, as a primary and ongoing site of personal and academic discovery for students\, can be one location where deficit framing has the greatest impact. As advisors\, the way we speak about\, react to\, and raise up a student’s background and goals can significantly impact their desire to persist at our institutions. \nThis webinar will explore the ways a strengths-based advising practice can foster more equitable and supportive advising interactions. We’ll discuss questions and framing that support strengths-based advising and scenarios where strengths-based advising can be challenging but potentially transformative. We’ll also consider how language focused on strengths can support individual\, departmental\, and institutional change. The webinar should provide the opportunity to learn and practice concrete strategies that can start to shift our advising practice away from deficit framing. \nAccommodations\nThe NED is committed to providing universal access to all of our events\, we’d like to discover how we can make the event more inclusive so you can fully participate! \nMachine generated captions are available in real-time for all Zoom events\, however human generated CART (live caption) service and ASL interpretation can be requested with advanced notice (2 weeks) to make the event more accessible. \nPlease\, let us know of any disability-related accommodations that will facilitate your full participation. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?\nContact the Network for Educational Development. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. After registering\, a calendar invite will be sent to you as a reminder of the event start date.
