SUMMARY:Enhancing Student Learning Outcomes Through Feedback (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:As faculty\, our role extends beyond delivering course content—we are also essential in helping students consolidate knowledge into long-term memory. However\, without effective feedback\, students’ metacognitive awareness may remain inaccurate\, leading to overconfidence and a disconnect between perceived and actual learning (Agarwal & Bain\, 2019).  This webinar will introduce two evidence-based forms of feedback—elaborative feedback and correct answer feedback—that have been shown to enhance student learning. Participants will also gain practical strategies to incorporate additional feedback into their teaching practices\, ultimately fostering deeper learning and student success. \nAccommodations\nThe NED is committed to providing universal access to all of our events\, we’d like to discover how we can make the event more inclusive so you can fully participate! \nMachine generated captions are available in real-time for all Zoom events\, however human generated CART (live caption) service and ASL interpretation can be requested with advanced notice (2 weeks) to make the event more accessible. \nPlease\, let us know of any disability-related accommodations that will facilitate your full participation. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?\nContact facilitator Ann Lichliter. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. After registering\, a calendar invite will be sent to you as a reminder of the event start date. \n

SUMMARY:Windows\, Mirrors\, and Gray Matters
DESCRIPTION:Installment #8 in the NED Excellence in Teaching SeriesMinnesota State is filled with incredible faculty who are doing amazing work focused on their teaching craft. The purpose of the Network for Educational Development (NED) Excellence in Teaching Series is to continue honoring and showcasing the experience and expertise of the Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence Educators of the Year through the opportunity to present\, share\, or teach about teaching and learning topics that have contributed to their recognition as excellent educators. Learn more about the BOT Awards.\n \nFacilitated by\nKari Frisch\nCentral Lakes College\n2019 Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence Educator of the Year \n  \nRead Kari's BiographyKari Frisch is a proud 1988 alumna of Central Lakes College (formerly Brainerd Community College) and a current instructor there. She has taught communication courses full-time for more than 25 years and has also served in several part-time educational development roles. Kari is the recipient of the Instructional Technology Council’s 2015 Outstanding eLearning Educator Award and the Minnesota State Board of Trustees 2019 Educator of the Year award. A graduate of the Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity train-the-trainer program in 2002\, she continues to apply one of its core concepts—Windows & Mirrors—in her teaching and professional practice and is excited to share more about that with colleagues through this presentation.\nWindows\, Mirrors\, & Gray Matters\nIn a world that seems increasingly polarized with “us vs. them” mentality and “all-or-nothing” thinking\, it’s time to see beyond the black and white\, and look into the various shades of gray. What once started as a curriculum tool to analyze children’s books in elementary classrooms\, the Windows & Mirrors theory can now be expanded to teaching and learning concepts across all types of educational levels and contexts. \nCome learn how to use this engaging framework across various disciplines to not only develop deeper connections to the concepts being taught\, but by better understanding the “gray matters” how we can also build deeper connections to each other as well. \nIn this session (with reflective breaks built-in) you’ll not only be introduced to the theory’s history and foundational components\, but you’ll be given ample opportunities to participate in interactive application examples where you’ll be challenged to apply the concepts yourself for a personalized learning experience. You’ll also witness the scaffolding power this framework has to foster deeper connections which can contribute to building a more empathetic learning community. \nFinally\, there will be time to creatively develop some new ideas for how to apply the theory in your own specific job. Whether you are an instructor\, or someone who works in education outside of the classroom\, you’re sure to discover ways to make the “gray matters” matter in what you do. \nLearning Outcomes:\n\nDeconstruct Emily Style’s educational theory of Windows & Mirrors and identify its foundational components\nParticipate in the interactive application of Windows & Mirrors Examples and discover its power to build community\nCompare and contrast expansions of the metaphor such as the “revolving/sliding glass door” and “Gray Matters”\nDiscover how like the brain’s gray matter\, our philosophical “Gray Matters” helps with memory\, emotions\, and “movement”\nSynthesize the concept of “Gray Matters” with Windows & Mirrors into the teaching & learning philosophy\nCreatively construct and share in Windows\, Mirrors\, & Gray Matters assignment ideas for various educational classrooms and contexts (programs\, departments\, workspaces\, extra curriculars\, etc.)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccommodations\nThe NED is committed to providing universal access to all of our events\, we’d like to discover how we can make the event more inclusive so you can fully participate! \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?\nContact the Network for Educational Development. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. SUMMARY:Using Strategies from Success Coaching to Support Equitable Advising (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:In our effort to support a diverse population of students\, transactional forms of advising—those strictly limited to course selection—should be interrogated and revised where possible. A fruitful area that can offer strategies is academic success coaching\, which focuses on holistic\, ongoing support of students centered around the concept of goal setting and personal development. Yet what is success coaching\, how might it connect to the role of an academic advisor\, and how can concepts from coaching be utilized in an advising interaction? \nThis webinar will explore definitions and practices associated with success coaching\, with a focus on how these practices can be leveraged to support more equitable advising. Emphasis will be placed on strategies that support decision facilitation in students and the role of the advisor in fostering accountability and growth. We will also discuss how the holistic\, individuated approach coaching takes can help advisors better support a diverse range of student populations. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?\nContact the Network for Educational Development. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. SUMMARY:Strengths-Based Advising (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:A subtle but pernicious challenge to students from marginalized populations navigating higher education is the presence of deficit thinking in implicit and explicit forms. Advising\, as a primary and ongoing site of personal and academic discovery for students\, can be one location where deficit framing has the greatest impact. As advisors\, the way we speak about\, react to\, and raise up a student’s background and goals can significantly impact their desire to persist at our institutions. \nThis webinar will explore the ways a strengths-based advising practice can foster more equitable and supportive advising interactions. We’ll discuss questions and framing that support strengths-based advising and scenarios where strengths-based advising can be challenging but potentially transformative. We’ll also consider how language focused on strengths can support individual\, departmental\, and institutional change. The webinar should provide the opportunity to learn and practice concrete strategies that can start to shift our advising practice away from deficit framing. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?\nContact the Network for Educational Development. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. SUMMARY:The Humanities and AI Prompting - What's the Connection?? (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we will explore “narrative prompting” as executable computer code. Because the basic concept of “prompt engineering” can only take us so far in understanding the human role in AI prompting\, we can look to the Humanities to teach us the logic of language and its possible use as an ethical and effective AI guide. We will review some ideas brought forth by Bryan and Ceredwyn Alexander of Bryan Alexander Consulting LLC\, who put forth the question\, “Can the Humanities Save Us from AI?” Let’s discuss together! \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions?\nContact the Network for Educational Development. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. SUMMARY:Accessibility Remediation Sprints: Creating Accessible PDF Files 3 (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Note: This is a repeat of Creating Accessible PDF Files 1 and 2 \nJoin us as we review an accessibility report for a PDF file.  We’ll identify criteria in an accessibility report that commonly passes and fails and provides participants with guidance on how to make basic changes to their content that address these accessibility standards. \nAlthough the facilitator will be unable to provide one-on-one assistance to all participants\, time will be allocated to allow participants to review their own accessibility report for a PDF file and to practice some of the strategies. \nAbout Accessibility Sprints\nD2L Brightspace now includes Accessibility+\, a tool that automatically checks course content using WCAG 2.1 standards and ISO 14289 for PDFs. The tool creates a report showing what passed and what failed. \nAs we revise materials\, some criteria may be unfamiliar or require new skills. To help\, we will offer Accessibility Sprints during Spring 2026. These sessions provide practical tips for improving files that do not meet accessibility standards. \nThe 3Rs – Remove\, Remediate\, or Refresh\nRemove\nDelete content that does not serve a clear purpose or adds unnecessary complexity. \nRemediate\nFix issues that are quick and simple\, such as adding alt text\, correcting headings\, improving contrast\, or fixing captions. Plan time for issues that need more complex work. \nRefresh\nIf a file needs extensive fixes\, it may be easier to rebuild it. A refreshed version can improve layout\, clarity\, and accessibility. \nAccommodations\nThe NED is committed to providing universal access to all of our events\, we’d like to discover how we can make the event more inclusive so you can fully participate! \n\nMachine generated captions are available in real-time for all Zoom events\, however human generated CART (live caption) service and ASL interpretation can be requested with advanced notice (2 weeks) to make the event more accessible. \nPlease\, let us know of any disability-related accommodations that will facilitate your full participation. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions? \n\nContact Network for Educational Development \n\n\nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. SUMMARY:{Rescheduled} Accessibility Remediation Sprints: Creating Accessible Presentation Files 2 (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Note: This is a repeat of Creating Accessible Presentation Files 1 \nJoin us as we review an accessibility report for a presentation file.  We’ll identify criteria in an accessibility report that commonly passes and fails and provides participants with guidance on how to make basic changes to their content that address these accessibility standards. \nAlthough the facilitator will be unable to provide one-on-one assistance to all participants\, time will be allocated to allow participants to review their own accessibility report for a presentation file and to practice some of the strategies. \nAbout Accessibility Sprints\nD2L Brightspace now includes Accessibility+\, a tool that automatically checks course content for accessibility issues. SUMMARY:Conversations with Colleagues (February 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Designing Accessibility from the Start\nIn this discussion\, we will focus on a proactive accessibility mindset in which we approach our materials and D2L courses with accessibility at the forefront. Practices such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, appropriate Word formatting\, and accessible by design will be discussed. Breakouts will be collaborative with practice in implementing accessibility in a make-and-take activity. Participants will then return for a whole group discussion and share what they accomplished in their make-and-take activity. \n\nConversations with Colleagues is a welcoming\, virtual gathering space designed to connect faculty and staff across Minnesota State. Whether you’re joining from your office\, your kitchen table\, or between classes\, bring your lunch and your curiosity as we come together to share ideas\, ask questions\, and learn from one another. \nNote: To prioritize real-time sharing and connection\, these sessions will NOT be recorded. \nEach session begins with a brief 5–10 minute presentation that introduces a timely or thought-provoking topic. From there\, we move into dynamic\, facilitated discussions\, both in small breakout groups and larger conversations\, where participants can explore the topic more deeply\, exchange perspectives\, and discover new approaches to teaching\, learning\, and working in higher education.  \nThis year\, our topics are guided by the Minnesota State Network for Educational Development theme – Empowering Every Learner: Strategies for Universal Access. This focus invites us to reflect on inclusive practices\, accessible learning environments\, and strategies that ensure all students can thrive.  \nThis is more than just a meeting—it’s a chance to:  \n\nLearn something new or see a familiar topic in a fresh light \n\n\nShare your own experiences and insights \n\n\nAsk questions and hear how others are navigating similar challenges \n\n\nBuild relationships and expand your professional network across the system \n\nWe believe that the best ideas often emerge through conversation. Conversations with Colleagues is hosted by faculty and staff from the Minnesota State Educational Development Committee and is open to all who are interested in fostering a culture of collaboration\, innovation\, and mutual support.  \nJoin us—and be part of the conversation. \n Request Accommodations\nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register.
