SUMMARY:Equity by Design Onboarding (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:March 23 – April 19\, 2026\nShort Course\nDescription\nThis four-week short course is designed to build foundational skills and knowledge for engaging in the Equity by Design methodology. Equity by Design is a Minnesota State strategic priority informed by the work of McNair\, Bensimon and others\, who have shown that one path toward closing equity gaps in higher education is through a race-conscious\, data-informed\, and equity-minded collaboration. \n\nModule 1 orients you to the course navigation\, goals\, and facilitators.\nModule 2 defines key terms\, introduces the Equity by Design methodology\, and shares connections to other Minnesota State initiatives.\nModule 3 provides further detail for each step in the methodology and supports skill building for conducting critical inquiry.\nModule 4 offers a guided process for defining\, implementing\, and sustaining Equity by Design interventions with plenty of practical examples. Module 5 provides resources for Equity by\n\nDesign work based on role including advisors\, deans/administrators\, faculty\, presidents/president’s cabinets\, and student support staff. Lastly\, Module 6 concludes the course with opportunities to reflect on your learning. \nCourse Learning Objectives \nBy engaging in this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the Equity by Design methodology. \n\n\nExplain and appreciate the differences between equity and equal treatment. \n\n\nExplain and appreciate the differences between race-conscious and color-blind lenses. \n\n\nExplain the value of making data-informed decisions. \n\n\nExplain and appreciate the differences between asset-based and deficit-based mindsets. \n\n\nShare examples\, resources\, and suggestions for sustained equity inquiry and action with their peers. \n\n\nContribute to their local campus\, and systemwide\, Equity by Design teams.\n\n\n\nSuggested Audience \nEquity by Design teams and individuals contributing to local campus and/or system-wide Equity by Design work. DESCRIPTION:March 23 – April 12\, 2026\n\nShort Course\nDescription\nThis course is an introduction to retrieval practice teaching methods. Retrieval practice focuses on improving long-term learning. DESCRIPTION:In our effort to support a diverse population of students\, transactional forms of advising—those strictly limited to course selection—should be interrogated and revised where possible. A fruitful area that can offer strategies is academic success coaching\, which focuses on holistic\, ongoing support of students centered around the concept of goal setting and personal development. DESCRIPTION:A subtle but pernicious challenge to students from marginalized populations navigating higher education is the presence of deficit thinking in implicit and explicit forms. Advising\, as a primary and ongoing site of personal and academic discovery for students\, can be one location where deficit framing has the greatest impact. As advisors\, the way we speak about\, react to\, and raise up a student’s background and goals can significantly impact their desire to persist at our institutions. \nThis webinar will explore the ways a strengths-based advising practice can foster more equitable and supportive advising interactions. We’ll discuss questions and framing that support strengths-based advising and scenarios where strengths-based advising can be challenging but potentially transformative. We’ll also consider how language focused on strengths can support individual\, departmental\, and institutional change. To support this process\, a series of Accessibility Sprints will be offered during the Spring 2026 term. SUMMARY:Accessibility Remediation Sprints: Creating Accessible Document Files 1 (Spring 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we review an accessibility report for a document file.  We’ll identify criteria in an accessibility report that commonly passes and fails and provides participants with guidance on how to make basic changes to their content that address these accessibility standards. \nAlthough the facilitator will be unable to provide one-on-one assistance to all participants\, time will be allocated to allow participants to review their own accessibility report for a document file and to practice some of the strategies. \nAbout Accessibility Sprints\nD2L Brightspace now features Accessibility+\, an integrated tool that scans course content and conducts an automated accessibility audit based on WCAG 2.1 standards (Levels A\, AA\, and AAA) and ISO 14289 for PDFs. \nInstructors receive a detailed accessibility report outlining which criteria were evaluated and whether each passed or failed. \nAs faculty work to remediate materials\, they may encounter criteria that are unfamiliar or require strategies they have not yet developed. To support this process\, a series of Accessibility Sprints will be offered during the Spring 2026 term. These sessions will provide practical guidance on making basic changes to improve files that did not meet specific accessibility standards. \nThe 3Rs – Remove\, Remediate\, or Refresh\nRemove\nSometimes the most accessible option is simply removing elements that don’t serve a clear purpose or that introduce complexity without adding value.  Is there content scanned by the audit that doesn’t need to be presented to students.  Redundant\, duplicative\, or “hidden” content \nRemediate\nFor content that must remain\, identify failed criteria where the issues identified are easier and less time consuming to fix.  This may include adding alternative text\, improving color contrast\, restructuring headings\, correcting captions\, etc.  Create a personal schedule to investigate issues that require more complicated remediation strategies or those that will require a greater amount of time to fix. \nRefresh\nFor content that requires a great deal of remediation\, it may be more appropriate to refresh your digital content entirely.  This may involve improving the layout of documents\, enhancing clarity\, or adopting newer\, more accessible formats and tools. \nAccommodations\nThe NED is committed to providing universal access to all of our events\, we’d like to discover how we can make the event more inclusive so you can fully participate! \n\nMachine generated captions are available in real-time for all Zoom events\, however human generated CART (live caption) service and ASL interpretation can be requested with advanced notice (2 weeks) to make the event more accessible. \nPlease\, let us know of any disability-related accommodations that will facilitate your full participation. \n Request Accommodations\nQuestions? \n\nContact Network for Educational Development \n\n\nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register.
