DESCRIPTION:Note: This is a repeat of Creating Accessible Document Files 1 and 2 \nJoin us as we review an accessibility report for a document file.  We’ll identify criteria in an accessibility report that commonly passes and fails and provides participants with guidance on how to make basic changes to their content that address these accessibility standards. \nAlthough the facilitator will be unable to provide one-on-one assistance to all participants\, time will be allocated to allow participants to review their own accessibility report for a document file and to practice some of the strategies. \nAbout Accessibility Sprints\nD2L Brightspace now includes Accessibility+\, a tool that automatically checks course content using WCAG 2.1 standards and ISO 14289 for PDFs. The tool creates a report showing what passed and what failed. \nAs we revise materials\, some criteria may be unfamiliar or require new skills. To help\, we will offer Accessibility Sprints during Spring 2026. These sessions provide practical tips for improving files that do not meet accessibility standards. \nThe 3Rs – Remove\, Remediate\, or Refresh\nRemove\nDelete content that does not serve a clear purpose or adds unnecessary complexity. \nRemediate\nFix issues that are quick and simple\, such as adding alt text\, correcting headings\, improving contrast\, or fixing captions. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Designing Accessibility from the Start\nIn this discussion\, we will focus on a proactive accessibility mindset in which we approach our materials and D2L courses with accessibility at the forefront. Practices such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL)\, appropriate Word formatting\, and accessible by design will be discussed. Breakouts will be collaborative with practice in implementing accessibility in a make-and-take activity. Participants will then return for a whole group discussion and share what they accomplished in their make-and-take activity. \n\nConversations with Colleagues is a welcoming\, virtual gathering space designed to connect faculty and staff across Minnesota State. Whether you’re joining from your office\, your kitchen table\, or between classes\, bring your lunch and your curiosity as we come together to share ideas\, ask questions\, and learn from one another. \nNote: To prioritize real-time sharing and connection\, these sessions will NOT be recorded. \nEach session begins with a brief 5–10 minute presentation that introduces a timely or thought-provoking topic. From there\, we move into dynamic\, facilitated discussions\, both in small breakout groups and larger conversations\, where participants can explore the topic more deeply\, exchange perspectives\, and discover new approaches to teaching\, learning\, and working in higher education.  \nThis year\, our topics are guided by the Minnesota State Network for Educational Development theme – Empowering Every Learner: Strategies for Universal Access. Topics include software\, evidence-based active teaching/learning practices within OERs\, OER networking\, Creative Commons Licenses\, OER conferences\, and tips for finding OERs. \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Nancyruth Leibold is an energetic and passionate OER Scholar\, Advanced Holistic Certified Nurse\, Certified Nurse Educator (CNE)\, and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Nancyruth enjoys teaching and learning in the School of Nursing at Minnesota State University\, Mankato. DESCRIPTION:February 2 – 22\, 2026\n\nShort Course\nDescription \nThis course is intended for Minnesota State faculty who are either teaching or planning to teach an online or hybrid course and are interested applying evidence-based strategies for humanizing the learning experience through effective facilitation and course design. The course is online and asynchronous. Although there are no scheduled class meetings\, participants may engage in virtual meetings with other students and course instructors as needed and at their convenience. The course is designed to take no more than 10 hours of work per week to complete.  \nThis is a facilitated\, collaborative learning experience that models many of the humanizing strategies that instructors might choose to include in their own courses. Participants will learn experientially by engaging with an instructor and colleagues from across the system in activities that showcase humanizing practices in action.  \nFaculty will develop their professional knowledge by reviewing the current theory and research in the area of humanizing online learning and engaging in independent reading in their own disciplines\, contributing what they discover to a shared knowledge base. They will then reflect on their own teaching style and practices and select evidence-based\, humanizing instructional strategies for implementation or refinement in their own online courses.
