The course is online and asynchronous. Although there are no scheduled class meetings\, participants may engage in virtual meetings with other students and course instructors as needed and at their convenience. The course is designed to take no more than 10 hours of work per week to complete.  \nThis is a facilitated\, collaborative learning experience that models many of the humanizing strategies that instructors might choose to include in their own courses. Participants will learn experientially by engaging with an instructor and colleagues from across the system in activities that showcase humanizing practices in action.  \nFaculty will develop their professional knowledge by reviewing the current theory and research in the area of humanizing online learning and engaging in independent reading in their own disciplines\, contributing what they discover to a shared knowledge base. They will then reflect on their own teaching style and practices and select evidence-based\, humanizing instructional strategies for implementation or refinement in their own online courses. They will evaluate and select specific techniques and tools for supporting those strategies and learn how to apply them.  \nBy the end of the course\, faculty will be able to make informed decisions regarding humanizing instructional strategies\, they will have a fully articulated plan for implementing and refining two or three humanizing strategies in their own courses\, and they will have the opportunity to join a growing learning community through which they can continue to learn and share the results of their humanizing strategies with colleagues from across the system.  \nCourse Learning Objectives \n\nDefine “humanizing” as it relates to online teaching and learning and explain why it’s important. \nDiscuss research findings that connect humanizing facilitation and course design strategies with online student success. \nReview the literature review on the impact of humanizing strategies specific to your own discipline/course and contribute your findings to a shared knowledge base. \nExperience and evaluate at least three tools and techniques\, including one that’s new to you\, for implementing evidence-based humanizing strategies. \nDevelop a fully articulated implementation plan for introducing or enhancing two to three evidence-based humanizing strategies in your online courses that best fit your teaching style\, including selecting the tools and techniques you will use to implement your chosen strategies\, developing an assessment method\, and possibly sharing your findings with the course’s learning community. \n\nTechnical Skill Requirements\n\nUse a web browser  \nCreate\, save and upload Word documents  \nNavigate Microsoft Windows  \nCreate and send an email using your Minnesota State account  \nEvaluate and decide whether or not to use OneDrive  \nPerform basic tasks associated with the following D2L Brightspace tools: Content\, Quizzes and Assignments \n\nMaterials Required \nPrior to beginning this course\, you should complete the following activities:  \n\nSelect a course that you’d like to which you’d like to apply these concepts \nContact your campus D2L/IT Helpdesk to create a D2L Brightspace “Sample/Sandbox” Course if you do not have one.\n\nSuggested Audience \nFaculty (Full-time and part-time)\, Instructional Designers and Technologists\, and Faculty Developers/Trainers  \nEstimated Time Commitment \nThe course is designed to take no more than 10 hours of work per week to complete.  \nReflect on your Professional Development \nAs you progress through this course\, please consider how you can use the assignments as a way to highlight your work on your Professional Development Plan. SUMMARY:Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Summer 2023
DESCRIPTION:June 5 – June 25\, 2023\n\nShort Course\n\nDescription \nOur chancellor has given us the challenge of eliminating our equity gaps by 2030. How can we\, as instructors\, shift our teaching practices to meet this goal? One promising path is to ground those practices in Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP). In this introductory course\, we’ll have the opportunity to examine how well our current practices align with the central tenets of CRP. CRP advocates that good teaching draws on the knowledge and skill our students bring to the classroom\, creates supportive relationships that allow students to take learning risks\, and prepares students to challenge barriers to their full flourishing. In this course we will increase our knowledge of some foundational CRP practices. \nTraining expectations are weekly short readings and weekly contributions to asynchronous discussions focused on how we might incorporate CRP into our teaching practices. All participants will receive a copy of Zaretta Hammond’s Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain\, which will be an option reading for the short course. \nCourse Learning Objectives \nThrough engaging in the work of the training\, faculty will be able to:  \n\nexplain to others the central tenets of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy\ngain ideas for how to incorporate those central tenets into course outcomes\, materials\, assessments\, activities\, syllabi\, and relationships\nidentify interconnections between microaggressions\, structural racism\, stereotype threat\, and course success\nuse our increased knowledge of CRP to share with\, support\, and encourage other faculty learners to increase everyone’s skills at CRP\ntrace how our values have changed and/or deepened through engaging in course\, and\ncreate a professional development plan for making next steps on the journey of culturally responsive teaching\n\nTechnical Skill Requirements\n\nUse a web browser \nCreate\, save and upload Word documents \nNavigate Microsoft Windows \nCreate and send an email using your Minnesota State account \nEvaluate and decide whether or not to use OneDrive \nSet up\, Attend\, and Participate in Zoom gatherings \nPerform basic tasks associated with the following D2L Brightspace tools: Content\, Quizzes\, Surveys\, Discussion\, and Assignments \n\nWork Involved/Artifacts Produced\n\nWeekly work reading\, watching\, learning\, reflecting\n4 Discussion Posts (1 connection\, 3 summary) and responses to peers\n\nSuggested Audience \nFaculty (Full-time and part-time)\, Instructional Designers and Technologists\, and Faculty Developers/Trainers.  \nEstimated Time Commitment \nMost participants are able to complete this course by committing 4-6 hours per week (mileage may vary). \nReflect on your Professional Development \nAs you progress through this course\, please consider how you can use the assignments as a way to highlight your work on your Professional Development Plan. SUMMARY:Teach Together Minnesota! 2023
DESCRIPTION:Teach Together Minnesota! is a free\, virtual conference bringing together educators from across Minnesota to have discussions with colleagues in their field of study grounded in cultural fluency and culturally responsive pedagogies. \n\nThe conference will feature:\nWhat the Data Taught UsOver the past few years\, 17 different discipline groups have come together in Discipline-Specific Faculty Learning Communities to create Action Plans with guidance from an Instructional Designer (Melissa Williams) and an Equity Coach (Ed Minnema). Learn first-hand what the data taught Melissa and Ed and where we can go from here.   Student PanelStudent panelists will share personal journeys of their educational experience\, what has led to their successes\, where they have encountered barriers to success\, and their experiences with online learning and cultural fluency. Learn more. Faculty Learning Community Project PerusalsThere are many stories: wildly successful results\, unexpected outcomes\, and examples of how an Action Plan didn’t pan out but the lessons learned from the experience provided valuable insights and future direction. All of these stories are important to our goal of increasing equity for our students and should be shared with our broader Minnesota State community.  Past Faculty Learning Community participants will share the spectrum of outcomes from their Action Plans throughout the day in 20-minute increments. These are not formal presentations\, but rather come-and-go “project perusal” opportunities for conference attendees. Discipline Group DiscussionsGather with educators in your field of study from around the state. Discipline groups are invited to engage in conversation\, share files\, keep a collective notebook\, and use a Teams chat feature for immediate and ongoing communication. Time will be spent thinking about “where we would like to be a year from now” and drawing connections between your work and the larger goal of Equity 2030. Making Connections PanelThe Making Connections Panel will highlight the connections between Minnesota State Guided Learning Pathways related projects and initiatives (i.e.\, Multiple Measures\, SUCCESS\, Transfer Pathways\, Concurrent enrollment) and Equity 2030. Hear and learn from faculty and staff who have moved equity and inclusion work forward on their campus through these Minnesota State Guided Learning Pathways related projects and initiatives. Learn more.   Receive a free eBook – When registering\, you will get the opportunity to receive the free eBook\, Inclusive Teaching: Strategies for Promoting Equity in the College Classroom\, by Kelly A. Hogan\, to help inform the discipline discussions. Audiobook versions will also be available.
