SUMMARY:Teach Together Minnesota! 2023
DESCRIPTION:Teach Together Minnesota! is a free\, virtual conference bringing together educators from across Minnesota to have discussions with colleagues in their field of study grounded in cultural fluency and culturally responsive pedagogies. \n\nThe conference will feature:\nWhat the Data Taught UsOver the past few years\, 17 different discipline groups have come together in Discipline-Specific Faculty Learning Communities to create Action Plans with guidance from an Instructional Designer (Melissa Williams) and an Equity Coach (Ed Minnema). Learn first-hand what the data taught Melissa and Ed and where we can go from here.   Student PanelStudent panelists will share personal journeys of their educational experience\, what has led to their successes\, where they have encountered barriers to success\, and their experiences with online learning and cultural fluency. Learn more. Faculty Learning Community Project PerusalsThere are many stories: wildly successful results\, unexpected outcomes\, and examples of how an Action Plan didn’t pan out but the lessons learned from the experience provided valuable insights and future direction. All of these stories are important to our goal of increasing equity for our students and should be shared with our broader Minnesota State community.  Past Faculty Learning Community participants will share the spectrum of outcomes from their Action Plans throughout the day in 20-minute increments. These are not formal presentations\, but rather come-and-go “project perusal” opportunities for conference attendees. Discipline Group DiscussionsGather with educators in your field of study from around the state. Discipline groups are invited to engage in conversation\, share files\, keep a collective notebook\, and use a Teams chat feature for immediate and ongoing communication. Time will be spent thinking about “where we would like to be a year from now” and drawing connections between your work and the larger goal of Equity 2030. Making Connections PanelThe Making Connections Panel will highlight the connections between Minnesota State Guided Learning Pathways related projects and initiatives (i.e.\, Multiple Measures\, SUCCESS\, Transfer Pathways\, Concurrent enrollment) and Equity 2030. Hear and learn from faculty and staff who have moved equity and inclusion work forward on their campus through these Minnesota State Guided Learning Pathways related projects and initiatives. SUMMARY:Cafeteria-Style Grading Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Installment #3 in the NED Excellence in Teaching SeriesMinnesota State is filled with incredible faculty who are doing amazing work focused on their teaching craft. Learn more about the BOT Awards. \n\nCafeteria-Style Grading Workshop\nVirtual Workshop\nFacilitated by: Deanna Forsman\, North Hennepin Community College and 2014 Board of Trustees Educator of the Year\nLearn more about Deanna Forsman \nDeanna Forsman graduated from UCLA in 2002 with a Ph.D. in Medieval European History. She has been teaching history at North Hennepin Community College since the Fall of 2002 and the occasional English Composition course since the Fall of 2018. She serves as Co-Editor In-Chief of The Heroic Age: A Journal of Early Medieval Northwestern Europe and Treasurer for the American Society for Medieval Irish Studies (ASIMS). Her research interests focus on “othering” and identity in Late Antiquity\, as well as student sense of belonging in the contemporary classroom. \n \nCafeteria-style grading is a pedagogical approach that allows students to customize their learning within specific parameters. This approach has been correlated with increased student engagement with course content and improved learning gains in the research literature. Preliminary research suggests it is associated with increased student sense of belonging in the classroom. \nThis workshop will provide a brief overview of cafeteria-style grading and its implementation in an online asynchronous history survey. The remainder of the workshop will be hands-on work to adapt current learning activities and goals to the cafeteria-style model. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have a road-map to implement cafeteria-style grading in their own classes. \nParticipants are advised to have current assignments/learning activities\, a syllabus\, and course outcomes at hand to facilitate the hands-on portion of the workshop. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. \nAfter registering\, a calendar invite with details on how to join will be sent to you\, please add this event to your calendar.  \nAccommodations: If you require accommodations (live captioning\, etc.) to participate in this event\, please send an email to the person at the bottom of this page.  \n\nQuestions?\nContact facilitator Deanna Forsman.
