SUMMARY:Cafeteria-Style Grading Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Installment #3 in the NED Excellence in Teaching SeriesMinnesota State is filled with incredible faculty who are doing amazing work focused on their teaching craft. The purpose of the Network for Educational Development (NED) Excellence in Teaching Series is to continue honoring and showcasing the experience and expertise of the Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence Educators of the Year through the opportunity to present\, share\, or teach about teaching and learning topics that have contributed to their recognition as excellent educators. Learn more about the BOT Awards.\n\nCafeteria-Style Grading Workshop\nVirtual Workshop\nFacilitated by: Deanna Forsman\, North Hennepin Community College and 2014 Board of Trustees Educator of the Year\nLearn more about Deanna Forsman\nDeanna Forsman graduated from UCLA in 2002 with a Ph.D. in Medieval European History. She has been teaching history at North Hennepin Community College since the Fall of 2002 and the occasional English Composition course since the Fall of 2018. She serves as Co-Editor In-Chief of The Heroic Age: A Journal of Early Medieval Northwestern Europe and Treasurer for the American Society for Medieval Irish Studies (ASIMS). Her research interests focus on “othering” and identity in Late Antiquity\, as well as student sense of belonging in the contemporary classroom. \n\nCafeteria-style grading is a pedagogical approach that allows students to customize their learning within specific parameters. This approach has been correlated with increased student engagement with course content and improved learning gains in the research literature. Preliminary research suggests it is associated with increased student sense of belonging in the classroom. \nThis workshop will provide a brief overview of cafeteria-style grading and its implementation in an online asynchronous history survey. The remainder of the workshop will be hands-on work to adapt current learning activities and goals to the cafeteria-style model. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have a road-map to implement cafeteria-style grading in their own classes. \nParticipants are advised to have current assignments/learning activities\, a syllabus\, and course outcomes at hand to facilitate the hands-on portion of the workshop. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. \nAfter registering\, a calendar invite with details on how to join will be sent to you\, please add this event to your calendar.  \nAccommodations: If you require accommodations (live captioning\, etc.) to participate in this event\, please send an email to the person at the bottom of this page.  \n\nQuestions?\nContact facilitator Deanna Forsman.

Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed or burned out? Disconnected? Perhaps you just got tenured and are wondering what’s next? Maybe you’re evaluating your job satisfaction or security? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this workshop is for you. \nThis is an action-focused workshop for mid-career faculty and staff. In teaching-focused institutions\, mid-career can be a challenging time to intentionally choose where you wish to engage and have impact while being true to your personal values and priorities. The structure of this workshop will offer you a space to consider and initiate an important\, doable change to align your values and practices AND an accountability group to assure you follow through. \nThis workshop takes place over three sequential sessions. \n Session One | March 23 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Watch the Recording \nTaking inventory. In this session you will complete reflective exercises with other faculty to examine your journey in higher education and your values. We will discuss familial-cultural\, geographic\, gender\, and racial scripts that may influence your internal narrative\, impact how you do your work\, and affect your wellbeing.   \nIt is critical to attend or watch the recording of session one before joining session two or three.\n  \n Session Two | March 30 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.Register \nAligning values and practices. In this session\, with other participants\, you will reflect on personal stuck points\, internal and external\, that create a mismatch between your values and practices. We will share grounding practices and time prioritization techniques. By the end of this session\, you will identify a small\, but meaningful practice you can add or change to better align your values and work priorities. \n Session Three | April 13 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m.Register \nSustaining change and taking care of future you. In this session\, participants will share experiences of their change practices and develop a personal plan for figuring out “what comes next.” Participants will share and gain resources related to self-compassion\, noting\, and other grounding practices. An important part of this final session will be looking forward to the next chapter in your journey and writing a message to your future self. \nRegistration Required\nUse the RSVP tool below to register. Please register for all three sessions separately. \nAfter registering\, a calendar invite with details on how to join will be sent to you\, please add this event to your calendar.  \nAccommodations: If you require accommodations (live captioning\, etc.) to participate in this event\, please send an email to the person at the bottom of this page.  \n\nQuestions?\nContact facilitator Janet Tilstra.
