Additionally\, we will consider the intersection of course data and program data to suggest possible next steps on how to use the data to inform next steps both within the classroom and within a program or discipline.   \nJoin us as we share resources\, ask questions\, and explore Equity by Design and Minnesota State Guided Learning Pathways. SUMMARY:Minnesota State REFLECT 2023 Applications Due (Learning Community)
DESCRIPTION:2023-2025 Cohort\nThe Minnesota State REFLECT program brings together faculty from across disciplines\, institutions\, and experience to participate in a 2-year Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) faculty learning community. Minnesota State REFLECT scholars will be supported as they develop\, implement\, and present research results at a conference or in a journal. SoTL studies will focus on pedagogical practices that enhance the teaching and student experience. Participants will meet for a fall retreat and then monthly to continue progress\, share ideas\, collaborate\, and to obtain consultation and support. \nParticipants will receive financial compensation in the form of release credit equivalency (RCE) of $3500 in combined salary and fringe each year. She also serves as Faculty Fellow for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) within SCSU’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). Dr Tilstra has a cross disciplinary background with clinical training in speech language pathology and research training in educational psychology. She has taught in higher education for more than 15 years and is passionate about person-centered approaches to clinic and education. Her most recent scholarly work relates to faculty and student experiences with interprofessional education and faculty development approaches which foster connection. \nIn April 2020\, Dr. Tilstra received one of the Minnesota State Board of Trustees Educator of the Year Awards for Excellence in teaching based on systematic measurement for learning outcomes\, community engagement partnerships\, and a strengths-based approach to culturally responsive practices. On a personal level\, Dr. Tilstra loves kayaking\, nuanced conversations\, books with great character development\, all things music\, and winning board games. She strives to think like a scientist\, foster potential in others\, live a balanced life\, and make the world a little bit better. \n\nAbout the Workshop\nHave you been teaching in higher ed for a while? Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed or burned out? Disconnected? Perhaps you just got tenured and are wondering what’s next? Maybe you’re evaluating your job satisfaction or security? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this session is for you. \nThis is an action-focused workshop for mid-career faculty and staff. In teaching-focused institutions\, mid-career can be a challenging time to intentionally choose where you wish to engage and have impact while being true to your personal values and priorities. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Disability Justice\nMarch 27 – April 16\, 2023\nShort Course\nDescription\nIn this 3-week introduction to disability justice course\, you will learn about disability justice\, practice using inclusive language\, and apply strategies to interrupt ableism. \nYou can expect to create documents and/or find ways to apply your learning right away\, including options like: \n\nWrite/revise inclusive accessibility statements\,\nDraft an email/letter to a decision maker advocating for a change through multiple means of communication\, i.e. email\, letter\, conversation\, etc.\nPractice strategies for addressing ableist language and microaggressions\,\nBrainstorm ways to re-design a campus space\, and/or\nApply inclusive language to campus communications and course documents.\n\nCourse Learning Objectives:\nBy the end of this 3-week short course\, participants will be able to: \n\nAdvocate for change grounded in disability justice.\nUse inclusive language and accessible design in course/campus communications.\nInterrupt ableist language or microaggressions.\n\nModules\nEach week we will focus on different key concepts and skills. These essential questions frame these key topics for each module: \n\nModule 1: What is disability? What is the social model vs. medical model of disability? Fully inclusive meetings and events consider all people –  placing access and inclusion on the forefront of the agenda! Anyone who helps to plan events of any scope will benefit from this conversation. \nJoin faculty and other colleagues to share practical advice on how to make your workshops\, meetings and events more accessible and inclusive. It’s not all about accessible documents – let’s talk about everything from the event announcement to food\, venue\, scheduling\, registration\, and more! \n\nIntroduction to topic (5 minutes)\nParticipants will reflect on their current practice with planning and hosting meetings and events (10-15 minutes)\nInclusive best practices will be shared (10 minutes)\nParticipants will discuss and share perspectives and ideas about creating more inclusive meetings and events (20-25 minutes)\nClosing – thoughts on equity (5 minutes)\n\n\nConversations with Colleagues is a monthly platform for colleagues across Minnesota State to gather remotely to share ideas and bring questions (along with your lunch). These monthly gatherings will provide you opportunity to engage in rich conversation in both small and large groups and networking with colleagues across the state!
