SUMMARY:Improving Online Assessments (3 week short course)
DESCRIPTION:October 12 – November 1\nDescription \nNot only can improving online assessments more accurately capture what students know\, but it can also increase learning\, deter student cheating\, and save you time over the long term. In this short course\, you’ll examine and apply principles of validity & reliability and writing effective quiz and test questions. You will then have the opportunity to evaluate and revise or develop your own online assessments. Additionally\, you’ll learn D2L specific strategies to improve test security and provide feedback..  \nIntroduction Video from the Facilitator\n \n\nJoin the Pre-Course Meeting (optional)\nYou are invited! The course facilitators will be hosting an optional pre-course meeting to connect\, get to know each other\, and discuss questions or chat about online assessment topics. Drop-in at any time during the hour. \nOctober 7\, 2020 1:00 – 2:00PM\, CST \nRegister for the pre-course meeting and you’ll be emailed information to join. \n\n\nCourse Learning Objectives \nAfter completing this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nApply principles of effective assessments to developing test questions  \nImplement strategies to improve test security  \nUtilize different methods of feedback on assessments  \n\nKey Topics include:\n\nMOTIVATION: This course focuses on assessment strategies for boosting motivation to promote academic honesty.\nALIGNMENT: Use alignment to boost assessment reliability and validity and build motivation.\nRETRIEVAL PRACTICE: A teaching method that uses quizzing for enhancing learning and motivation.\nWRITING EFFECTIVE QUESTIONS: Multiple choice\, true false are explored\, and extension materials for addressing additional question types are offered.\nQUIZZES: Focus on D2L Brightspace Quizzes features including question pools\, sections\, security features\, feedback options\, and more!\n\nTechnical Skill Requirements\n\nUse a web browser  \nCreate\, save and upload Word documents  \nNavigate Microsoft Windows  \nCreate and send an email using your Minnesota State account  \nEvaluate and decide whether or not to use OneDrive  \nPerform basic tasks associated with the following D2L Brightspace tools: Content\, Quizzes and Assignments \n\nMaterials Required\nPrior to beginning this course\, you should complete the following activities:  \n\nSelect a course and related assessments to which you’d like to apply these concepts \nContact your campus D2L/IT Helpdesk to create a D2L Brightspace “Sample/Sandbox” Course if you do not have one.\nCourse URL: https://mnsite.learn.minnstate.edu/d2l/home/5082411 (Registration required)\n\nSuggested Audience \nFaculty (Full-time and part-time)\, Instructional Designers and Technologists\, and Faculty Developers/Trainers  \nEstimated Time Commitment \nMost participants are able to complete this course by committing 4-6 hours per week.  \nReflect on your Professional Development \nAs you progress through this course\, please consider how you can use the assignments as a way to highlight your work on your Professional Development Plan.
