Description 

This is one of the required courses for the fulfillment of the teaching and learning competency requirement included in Part 8 of System Procedure 3.32.1 College Faculty Qualifications.

“College faculty members [MSCF] newly hired into unlimited positions, including counselors and librarians, shall successfully complete the teaching and learning competency requirement within six academic-year semesters from the date of hire or conversion into an unlimited position.”

This self-paced, facilitated course was developed by system office staff with input from Minnesota State faculty members.

Course Learning Objectives 

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe today’s community and technical college students and explain how their experiences and needs shape your design and instructional.
  • Explain the role and impact of community and technical colleges for students, communities, and the workforce.
  • Summarize how historical, political, social, and economic events have shaped the development of community and technical college education, with a focus on Minnesota.
  • Distinguish among credit and certificate programs and structural elements that support academic programs in community and technical colleges and how they support student goals.
  • Explain how governance, funding, administration, and faculty work are organized within Minnesota’s community and technical colleges.

You will also explore how these key topics connect to effective and equitable teaching practice in your own context.

Technical Skill Requirements 

  • Use a web browser 
  • Perform basic tasks associated with D2L Brightspace Assignments, Content, Discussions, and Quizzes
  • Create, save, and upload Word documents 
  • Create and send an email using your Minnesota State account
  • Optional: Create and share a video using Kaltura Media Space tools

Audience 

Minnesota State college faculty completing the System Procedure 3.32.1, Part 8 Teaching and Learning Competencies.

Although this course is required of all new unlimited, full-time college faculty, it is open to Faculty (Full-time and part-time), Instructional Designers and Technologists, Faculty Developers/Trainers, and Concurrent Enrollment instructors.

Estimated Time Commitment 

Most participants are able to complete this course by committing 2-3 hours per week. 

Note: You may need to complete additional Teaching and Learning Competency courses. Connect with your campus HR or your Dean to determine your requirements.

Document your Professional Development 

When you complete this course, be sure to document your course completion in Workday. Review additional details on the information site, Step 3. Approval.
