2024 NED Teaching and Learning Conference: Call for Proposals

Network for Educational Development Teaching and Learning Conference

October 3 – 4, 2024

September 26 – 27, 2024

In-person (Metro State University) and Online

The Network for Educational Development (NED) invites proposals for the 2024 NED Teaching and Learning Conference, which will be held in-person at Metro State University and online on September 26 – September 27, 2024. The NED Teaching and Learning Conference is sponsored by the Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) Educational Development Committee.

The theme for this conference is Guides for the Educational Journey.

Guides for the Educational Journey

It is our collective responsibility to remove the barriers that interfere with students’ success on their educational journey. Called to action by Equity 2030, the pathways we create and the resources we provide will disrupt systems of oppression, eliminate outcomes predictable by race, and support student achievement. As students travel along their educational pathways, we will be a collective of guides, partnering with students as they navigate through, persist in, and complete their journeys. We recognize that these paths go beyond the educational journey and lead to fulfilling, sustainable careers that increase quality of life.

About the NED Teaching and Learning Conference

The NED Teaching and Learning Conference will be held in-person and virtually. Participants can choose to attend both in-person at Metro State University and virtual sessions, as some in-person sessions will be streamed to accommodate online attendees.

TrackTrack Description
Evidenced based teaching practices as foundational to the student journey With our continued commitment to refining our teaching practices, students will be able to engage in innovative instructional practices as they develop their skills and deepen their knowledge within our disciplines. Which of our practices are crucial in our collaborative work, guiding students along their educational journey?

This track will offer sessions on such topics as: Leveraging learning modalities (flexible, online, blended), Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), Trauma Informed pedagogy, Culturally responsive pedagogy, Anti-racist pedagogy, and Universal Design in Learning
Supporting the whole student on their journey  Students and instructors enter each learning experience as whole people. Embracing a holistic, inclusive mindset allows space for struggle, growth, and differences in experience. Choices guided by a holistic mindset affect teaching and learning practices from syllabi construction to assessments and grading, from course content and materials to learning activities. In what ways are we recognizing the whole student in our partnerships with them, becoming more effective and compassionate guides?

This track will offer sessions on such topics as: Mental Health, Advising, Accessibility, Trauma Informed pedagogy
Removing barriers on the student journey  Redesigning our courses, our programs, and our onboarding and existing processes to eliminate structural and conceptual barriers will allow all our students to have clear and achievable pathways to their educational goals. In what ways are we offering students smooth and understandable roadmaps?

This track will offer sessions on such topics as: Corequisite Education  Transfer, the importance of onboarding students (to your class and institution), Accessibility
Equitable Journeys  Institutions of Higher Education have been designed around the needs and resources of only a subset of humanity. In contrast, equitable practices separate student behavior and resources from the assessment of their knowledge. These practices emphasize the belief that all students can learn and meet learning targets. In what ways are we becoming the equity-minded guides our students deserve?

This track will offer such sessions as: Equity by Design, Equity and Technology (flexible, multi model), Equity in Grading, Providing equitable services for student populations (part-time, returning, adult, veteran, LGTBQIA+, etc.), and Inclusive content
Innovation and Evolution in guiding the educational journey  Ongoing innovation is one space where equity work and teaching intersect. This includes new perspectives and ways of engaging in critical and inclusive instruction/teaching. What innovative spaces (digital/physical), frameworks, ways of thinking, and methods are we bringing into our practices?

This track will offer such sessions as: Open Educational Resources (OER) and Z-degrees, Innovation projects, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Call for Proposals

The NED Teaching and Learning Conference Committee seeks proposals for sessions that provide attendees with the tools and resources needed to reposition, rethink, and revitalize systems and selves, and that are grounded in research and supported by evidence.

Proposals will be accepted in 3 formats:

FormatProposal Format Description
50-minute session Every 50-minute session will include active engagement by participants and substantial time for conversation. This type of session may include a panel discussion format. We encourage student co-facilitators.
