NED Teaching and Learning Conference: Pre-Conference Workshop

Racial Equity Advocates Faculty Development Program

Thursday, September 26, 2024

8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

This Pre-Conference Workshop will provide participants with an overview of the Racial Equity Advocates faculty development program that Minnesota State University, Mankato has implemented.

Facilitators

  • Beth Beschorner – Minnesota State University, Mankato
  • Timothy Berry – Minnesota State University, Mankato
  • Brooke Burk – Minnesota State University, Mankato

The workshop is in-person only and held before the NED Teaching and Learning Conference. There is a limit of 40 participants and the cost is $105 (includes registration to the NED Teaching and Learning Conference).

The Racial Equity Advocates program has two components:

  1. Support for the participants’ completion of training to use the Courageous Conversations about Race (CCAR) protocol.
  2. Monthly meetings where we deepen our understanding of the use of the CCAR protocol by discussing problems of practice related to racial equity on campus that have been identified by the participants.

The workshop is grounded in conversations using common definitions for words related to antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion and utilizes embodied practices like mindful inquiry and role playing.

The workshop will provide details of the program’s facilitation and its monthly activities, which include supporting faculty to learn the CCAR protocol and will provide opportunities for participants at the workshop to practice utilizing the strategies employed in the Racial Equity Advocates sessions (e.g. role play).

For example, the workshop will include an introduction to the CCAR protocol, the use of mindful inquiry, and include examples of role playing that were used with Racial Equity Advocates.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will become familiar with the design for Racial Equity Advocates, including using a cohort model that applies language related to race consistently, encouraging self-reflection about race, and identifying problems of practice that might lead to more equitable outcomes on campus.
  • Participants will apply the process and practices used (e.g. mindful inquiry, role play) with faculty together to become advocates and consider what might be necessary to utilize a similar approach on their own campuses.
