Exploration and Development of Non-Traditional Grading Methods

When it comes to equity work in the classroom, one major area we can consider is how we grade. Although we are required to submit our institution’s required final grades, there are many possibilities available for how our students earn those grades.

This 3-part series will provide an introduction and overview of various non-traditional grading methods as well as help participants develop individual plans for how they might use these methods for specific assignments or courses. The workshop structure will allow for peer-to-peer discussion and feedback.

Participants should plan to attend all 3 sessions, but the first session will be recorded and may be viewed in preparation to attend the later sessions.

Session One

The Why and How

March 20 @ 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Faculty participants will explore nontraditional grading methods such as ungrading, labor grading, and contract grading and discuss these opportunities with peers.

Session Two

Developing Your Own Ideas for Using Non-Traditional Grading Methods

March 27 @ 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Faculty participants will collaborate with peers to develop a specific idea of implementing a nontraditional grading method in a specific course, unit, or assignment.

Session Three

Creating a Plan to use Non-Traditional Grading Methods for a Course or Assignment

April 4 @ 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Faculty participants will create and finalize a plan to implement nontraditional grading in a specific course and provide feedback to peer faculty on their plans.

The Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence acknowledge and provide systemwide recognition for consistently superior commitment to student learning of our college and university teaching and service faculty.
