The Opportunities and Risks of AI in Higher Education

AI amplifies, accelerates and automates existing patterns. For anyone with learning differences AI presents both extreme opportunities and risks. AI’s powerful capabilities can bridge barriers for students with learning differences. Instructors can delegate formulaic tasks to AI assistants, freeing up time to attend to students. However, AI at its most basic is mechanised statistical reasoning and students with disabilities are heterogeneous statistical outliers in data. As a result, AI’s predictions and decisions are often a misfit for students with disabilities.
Participants will learn how AI enhances accessibility in higher education and the protections needed to prevent the potential harms of AI. AI presents a pivot point for education, providing a mirror of the current education trends. This offers an opportunity to consider how we design education in the presence of an educational future with AI.
