Olympic Legend Billy Mills speaks at Southwest Minnesota State Univesity

  • Olympic legend Billy Mills spoke at Southwest Minnesota State University on Jan. 11. Mills, the gold medalist in the 10,000 meters at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was the featured guest at the Waniyetu (“winter”) Celebration. He is a member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe, and the only American ever to win an Olympic 10,000 meter race.  Mills had several appearances. He had an open meet-and-greet session in the morning, lunch with the Oyate Club, spoke to a number of regional Native American high school students in the afternoon, participated in a traditional feast featuring native foods and delivered an inspirational talk in the evening. His theme was setting goals and being the best you can be.  The like to the story: http://smsu.edu/today/index.cfm?articleid=2303
