Legislative Update – January 16, 2015

Yesterday at the Capitol

The Senate Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee met yesterday to discuss the North Star Summit held in December. Before that discussion, however; Chair Sen. Terri Bonoff, DFL-Minnetonka, spoke about the Senate’s priorities and how three of them align with higher education: SF2 (Stumpf) two-year college free tuition; SF3 (Clausen) loan forgiveness program; and SF5 (Bonoff) “Earn while you Learn” dual education program.

Chair Bonoff also discussed the committee’s key goals from last session; reduce cost to students, build a 21st century workforce, and increase degree completion. Bonoff said those goals will continue to move forward and help structure the work of the committee this session.

Sean Kershaw, Executive Director of the Citizens League, and Pahoua Hoffman, Policy Director with the Citizens League, said that based on the survey results at the North Star Summit, they determined that there is broad support for defining post-secondary attainment goals. Kershaw and Pahoua discussed what those goals might look like with the committee. The survey results regarding the goals can be found at: Higher Education Summit: Defining Attainment Goals for MN.
