With days of stalled budget negotiations, there appears to be progress as legislative leaders and Gov. Walz met until about 2:00 a.m. today and are going back in later this morning to resume end of session negotiations.
If an agreement is reached today, conference committees can get to work with budget targets and try to close up their bills. The higher education conference committee met every day last week and walked through the House and Senate provisions in the bill, but have been unable to discuss any finance-related provisions since they don’t yet know how much money is available to spend.
The conference committee is at the call of the chair today. If a budget agreement is reached today, conferees could start making difficult decisions as early as today.
Legislators have six days to pass a two-year state budget and wrap up the session. The government relations team will provide updates as progress is made with the higher education bill.
