Guidelines for Generative Artificial Intelligence

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) introduces disruption and opportunities for educators. It also induces anxieties and optimism characteristic of emerging technologies. Educators are grappling with how to best harness this unique moment in history for the advancement of teaching and learning, research, and student success.

The Minnesota State system office is here to help institutions build a strong foundation that supports the acceptable use of generative AI for teaching and learning, research, and the delivery of student services.

The guidance document Generative Artificial Intelligence: Policy Intersections, Considerations and Recommendations is intended to support the acceptable use of generative AI services in Minnesota State by:

  1. Clarifying the applicability of existing board polices, system procedures, and operating instructions to existing and emerging generative artificial intelligence services.
  2. Provide helpful considerations and recommendations for faculty, staff, and administrators exploring the use of generative AI in their classrooms and in their work.
  3. Present a solid foundation on which institutions can design local generative AI policies and guidelines that make sense for their campus communities.
