Digital Media Accessibility Using the Quality Matters Rubric (Spring 2026)

March 5 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Free
NED: Accessibility

This one‑hour online workshop introduces faculty and instructional staff to essential practices for creating accessible digital media aligned with the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric, with a focus on General Standard 8: Accessibility and Usability. Participants explore practical techniques for ensuring that images, documents, videos, and course interfaces support equitable access for all learners. The session draws on tools and checkers commonly used across Minnesota State (such as Word, D2L, and media captioning workflows) and connects them directly to QM expectations for high‑quality online course design.

  1. Identify key accessibility requirements outlined in Quality Matters General Standard 8, including alternative text, captioning, color contrast, document structure, and usability considerations.
  2. Evaluate common digital media elements in an online course using accessibility checkers available in Word/Office and D2L, determining whether they meet the criteria described in the Quality Matters rubric.
  3. Apply practical strategies to revise or create digital media that supports learner access and aligns with the broader Quality Matters quality framework adopted institution‑wide.
