Foundations of Teaching Online (Summer 2025)

Long Course

The Foundations of Teaching Online long course will help faculty build well-designed online experiences for their students, and deans evaluate online experiences from a student perspective. Participants will learn about quality standards in online course design and the basic principles of backwards design and alignment. In addition, they will be introduced to strategies that create a welcoming, accessible, and collaborative environment where all learners can succeed.

The class is split into two groups:faculty track and a dean track.

While some course experiences will be together, many assignments will be targeted to different campus roles. Register for the Deans track Summer 2025.

Course Learning Objectives – Faculty Track

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Construct a course schedule, template, or outline that includes at least one learning objective for each module
  • Create an alignment map with your learning objective(s), assessment tool, and learning activities
  • Plan strategies to humanize your online course, using principles of trust, presence, awareness, and empathy
  • Identify elements that improve the accessibility of course materials including documents, webpages, and media

Suggested Audience 

Faculty (Full-time and part-time), Instructional Designers and Technologists, Faculty Developers/Trainers, and Concurrent Enrollment instructors.

Estimated Time Commitment 

Most participants are able to complete this course by committing 4-6 hours per week.

As you progress through this course, please consider how you can use the assignments as a way to highlight your work on your Professional Development Plan. Consider sharing your work with your leadership team.
