Hacking Your Course Assessments (Summer 2025)

Short Course
Description
How do you really know that your students are learning what you had intended? In this course, you’ll get an opportunity examine the learning objectives in your course (something your students should know or be able to do) and the assessments that are aligned to help measure and evaluate student achievement on this learning objective. During the course, you’ll have an opportunity to explore traditional assessments or performance based assessments and make improvements to your own traditional assessment or scoring rubric to improve validity and reliability, as well as reduce the presence of bias in your assessment. Finally, you will be able apply the wise feedback method to provide effective feedback on a student work sample.
Course Learning Objectives
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Align an assessment tool with a learning objective to measure student
learning. - Create an assessment aligned with a learning objective.
- Improve an assessment or rubric to support equitable outcomes.
- Apply the Wise Feedback method to student work.
- Build an equitable and aligned assessment plan.
Materials Required
Prior to beginning this course, you should complete the following activities:
- Select a course and related assessments to which you’d like to apply these concepts
- Contact Tech Support to set up a D2L Brightspace “Sample/Sandbox” Course if you do not have one
Suggested Audience
Faculty (Full-time and part-time), Instructional Designers and Technologists, and Faculty Developers/Trainers, Assessment Coordinators, Institutional Researchers.

Estimated Time Commitment
Most participants are able to complete this course by committing 4-6 hours per week.
