Small Tweaks, Big Impact: Supporting New Faculty Communication

Teaching is more than content delivery—it is emotional and relational work.
Feeling confident one day and discouraged the next is normal, especially when teaching in a new role or context. These moments are not signs of failure; they are opportunities for awareness and adjustment. This session will provide opportunities for you to reflect on your experiences as a new faculty member, and to provide options for tweaking how you communicate with students across the various components of your course.

Outcomes:

• Describe common patterns experienced by faculty and how they contribute to student concerns and faculty workload
• Apply simple, low‑effort adjustments to mindset, syllabi, assignments, and assessments that meaningfully improve teaching practices.
• Understand students as people and adopt relationship‑centered practices that foster trust, belonging, and engagement.

All new faculty are invited to participate. This session will be especially relevant for faculty who are new to teaching or new to full-time teaching and/or are teaching in a new format or context.
