Learning Community (LCOM) Institute, May 21-22, 2012 at Inver Hills Community College – Inver Hills Community College is hosting a Learning Community Institute on May 21st and 22nd.    The institute features two nationally recognized keynote speakers and facilitators.  Lynn Dunlap, co-author of Learning Communities in Community Colleges, has presented sessions about Learning Communities at regional and national conferences, evaluated learning community programs, and facilitated faculty retreats and workshops at colleges across the US. Dunlap regularly serves as a resource faculty member for the annual National Summer Institute on Learning Communities, organized by the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education.   Rashne Jehangir, author of Higher Education and First-Generation Students: Cultivating Community, Voice and Place for the New Majority, is currently a faculty member and co-coordinator of the First-Year Experience Program in the Department of Post-Secondary Teaching and Learning at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development.

The institute will also offer multiple breakout sessions on specific topics such as Designing LCOMs and Institutional Fit, LCOMs and Developmental Education, Designing and Assessing Integrative Assignments, Forming a Regional Consortium, and Integrating College Readiness in LCOMs. The Institute is designed for colleges planning to develop a learning community program as well as for those with established programs.
