Lake Superior College to add Men’s and Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Programs in 2015
(Duluth, MN) – Lake Superior College will debut men’s and women’s intercollegiate soccer programs beginning Fall 2015.
They’ll be the first official intercollegiate sports programs ever at LSC.
“It’s exciting to be starting collegiate athletics at Lake Superior College,” said Dr. Mark Magnuson, LSC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs. “Everything is still very much in the planning stages, but this’ll be a great opportunity for our students and the college.”
Magnuson will also serve as LSC’s interim athletic director. He added that both the men’s and women’s teams will likely play between 16-18 regular season games each, followed by additional tournament and/or playoff competition as warranted.
Once LSC applies for and receives approval to join the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III, LSC plans to join and compete in the Minnesota Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC). Fellow MCAC schools with varsity soccer include Century College (White Bear Lake, MN), Riverland Community College, and Rochester Community and Technical College.
Tentatively, tryouts and training for both teams would begin August 2015, just prior to their corresponding fall sports schedules. Each team would field approximately 23 players.
The home field for both teams will be located off-campus, with an exact location currently being decided.
