Generative AI Workshop Series

Generative AI Workshop Series

Does the rapid emergence of generative AI applications like ChatGPT have you rethinking your course assignments? Have you moved from, “What’s ChatGPT?” to “How do I encourage authentic writing when all of my students are using ChatGPT?”

Join the Minnesota State Network for Educational Development this summer for a series of conversations about the impact of generative AI on writing assignments.

We will focus on a specific type of assignment each month:

  • online discussions,
  • essays and other long-answer assignments, and
  • lab and study reports.

Register for each session in the three-part series.

Online Discussions

June 21 @ 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Do you require your students to participate in D2L Brightspace Discussions that engage students in conversation with one another about course topics? Join us for a conversation about the impact of generative AI on this type of writing assignment. Learn how to encourage authentic contributions, spot AI-generated posts, and better integrate AI into your discussion activities as a helpful tool.

Essays and Long-answer Assignments

July 18 @ 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.

Generative AI can roll out original essays with astonishing speed and clarity of structure. In this session, we will discuss strategies for re-examining the purpose, timeline, and follow-up activities for your writing assignments that will deepen students’ connections to the topic, and either subvert the interest in using generative AI, or to facilitate working alongside it.

Lab and Study Reports

August 8 @ 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

In addition to poems and essays, generative AI applications like ChatGPT can be used to produce sections of lab reports and other types of study reports, complete with sample data. Join us for a conversation about the impact of generative AI on these types of writing assignments. Learn how to encourage authentic writing, spot the inappropriate use of AI, and integrate AI tools into your research activities in productive ways.
