Minnesota State is filled with incredible faculty who are doing amazing work focused on their teaching craft. The purpose of the Network for Educational Development (NED) Excellence in Teaching Series is to continue honoring and showcasing the experience and expertise of the Board of Trustees Awards for Excellence Educators of the Year through the opportunity to present, share, or teach about teaching and learning topics that have contributed to their recognition as excellent educators. Learn more about Deanna Forsman

Deanna Forsman graduated from UCLA in 2002 with a Ph.D. in Medieval European History. She has been teaching history at North Hennepin Community College since the Fall of 2002 and the occasional English Composition course since the Fall of 2018. She serves as Co-Editor In-Chief of The Heroic Age: A Journal of Early Medieval Northwestern Europe and Treasurer for the American Society for Medieval Irish Studies (ASIMS). Her research interests focus on ‚Äúothering‚ÄĚ and identity in Late Antiquity, as well as student sense of belonging in the contemporary classroom.

Cafeteria-style grading is a pedagogical approach that allows students to customize their learning within specific parameters. This approach has been correlated with increased student engagement with course content and improved learning gains in the research literature. Preliminary research suggests it is associated with increased student sense of belonging in the classroom.

This workshop will provide a brief overview of cafeteria-style grading and its implementation in an online asynchronous history survey. The remainder of the workshop will be hands-on work to adapt current learning activities and goals to the cafeteria-style model. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a road-map to implement cafeteria-style grading in their own classes.

Participants are advised to have current assignments/learning activities, a syllabus, and course outcomes at hand to facilitate the hands-on portion of the workshop.
