The NED was established to provide educational development opportunities that are designed by Minnesota State faculty and staff for Minnesota State faculty and staff. These opportunities help build awareness, develop knowledge, skills, and abilities, and provide space for reflecting and revising.

Supporting Multilingual Learners in Our Disciplines
Multilingual learners (MLs), sometimes called English language learners, comprise a significant part of our Minnesota State student population. It is challenging to track ML learner success because state and federal policies do not require higher education institutions to monitor the progress of MLs and most institutions do not systematically track each student’s language proficiency. However, research shows that a relatively small percentage of MLs who enroll in higher education earn credentials. So what can faculty do to optimize the success of MLs in our disciplines? And how can we be intentional about this on top of what we are already doing to support equity and inclusion? Come join us for some information on challenges that MLs face, how leveraging culturally responsive pedagogy and accessibility practices can be helpful, and for some informal conversation around challenges and successes we are experiencing supporting MLs in our disciplines. Note: The brief presentation at the beginning of this conversation will draw from sources including Inside Higher Ed’s 2020 article, “Making Headway on ESL.”
When colleagues readied themselves for emergency remote teaching this spring, we all received a powerful reminder in the value of social learning. Colleagues from across the system who had been separated from one another through physical distance came together online to share ideas and learn from one another. We would like to sustain this social learning through Conversations with Colleagues, a program for those who are interested in connecting with one another.
Meet new faculty, gather with long-time friends from across Minnesota State, and bring questions and ideas (along with your lunch) to these monthly gatherings that will include conversation starters and an opportunity for both large and small group conversations. Additionally, you’ll be able to add your name to a searchable list of faculty and staff who are willing to share their expertise and areas of interest with others.
