NED affiliated personal and professional development. Minnesota State is offering several opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to engage in practices designed to improve the functioning of our democracy during today’s polarized times.
Description
The United States is in conflict, as most Americans demand change in the policing practices that are intended to create safer neighborhoods. In the spring of 2020, the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Rayshard Brooks sparked nation- wide protests as many citizens voiced their concerns about the unjust treatment of racial minorities. All three died during encounters with police, and their names joined a lengthy list: Eric Garner in New York City in 2014, Freddie Gray in Baltimore, MD in 2015, Philando Castile in St. Paul, MN and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, LA in 2016, to name only a few. Too many unarmed Black people and other Americans from vulnerable populations have died at the hands of police officers. Now, the majority of people nationwide, including police chiefs and police officers, are calling for change. What should we do?
We invite Minnesota State faculty and staff to join this forum to discuss options for what we should do to ensure equal justice and fair treatment in our communities, offered exclusively for Minnesota State students, faculty, and staff in partnership with the National Issues Forum Institute’s With The People initiative.

This forum will be conducted in an online, text-based platform called Common Ground for Action (CGA). You will receive connection details once registered, and do not need to download any software; CGA runs through your web browser. You will read information about the options and enter in your responses using your mouse and keyboard. You will need access to an internet connection and a way to input text. Forums generally last 2 hours and participants should plan to join on time and stay for the entire discussion.
