Faculty members teaching within the discipline of manufacturing and/or construction are invited to join colleagues in this three-week short course to explore and apply different assessment methods to the courses you teach.

How do you really know that your students are learning what you had intended? Examine the learning objectives in your course and the assessments that are aligned to help measure and evaluate student achievement on this learning objective.

During the course, you’ll have an opportunity to explore traditional assessments or performance based assessments and make improvements to your own traditional assessment or scoring rubric to improve validity and reliability, as well as reduce the presence of bias in your assessment.

Finally, you will be able apply the wise feedback method to provide effective feedback on a student work sample.

In this three week short course, participants will complete short readings with corresponding activities and participate in weekly synchronous discussions via Zoom.

Course Learning Objectives

Module 1:  By the end of this module you will be able to do the following:

  1. Presented with different types of assessments, you will be able to define and classify traditional (selected and constructed response) and performance assessments.
  2. You will be able to identify, classify, and align an assessment tool to measure and evaluate student learning for a given learning objective,
  3. You will create an assessment aligned to measure student learning for a learning objective that you have prepared.

Module 2:  By the end of this module you will be able to do the following:

  1. You will be able to define and classify the elements that make these assessments effective.
  2. Presented with a sample of traditional and performance based assessments, you’ll critically analyze these assessments and make suggestions to improve validity and reliability, as well as to reduce bias.
  3. You will make improvements to your own traditional assessment or scoring rubric to improve validity and reliability, as well as reduce the presence of bias in your assessment.

Module 3: By the end of this module you will be able to do the following:

  1. You will be able to define and classify effective elements of feedback.
  2. You will be able apply the wise feedback method to provide effective feedback on a student work sample.
  3. You’ll use the tools provided within the Learning Management System, D2L Brightspace, to construct the assessments that you prepared in this course.
  4. Through a personal reflection, identify the changes you made to your assessments you brought with you to this course .

Materials Required

Prior to beginning this course, you should complete the following activities.

    • Select a course and related assessments to which you’d like to apply these concepts
    • Contact Tech Support to set up a D2L Brightspace “Sample/Sandbox” Course if you do not have one

Suggested Audience

Faculty (Full-time and part-time) within the manufacturing and/or construction fields of study.
